The NCCJ cordially invites you and your colleagues to NCCJ Briefing & Drinks with Safecast.
We are pleased to invite you on Wednesday, 27 February 2013 to the fourth edition of “Briefing & Drinks” whereby an NCCJ member presents the sector in which they operate, as well as an outlinine of their strategies and operations. Our host company this time is Safecast, a volunteer organization that was established a week after the 3/11 earthquake (see http://blog.safecast.org/)
About Safecast
In cooperation with other groups, including Tokyo Hacker Space, Keio University and MIT Media Lab, Safecast has collected radiation measurements throughout Japan, including within the Tohoku danger zones. Although the organization is global, with more than 100 volunteers working throughout the world, the majority of its efforts is focused on Japan. Safecast’s aim is to gather reliable radiation level data and to share this information.
Safecast has been building a radiation sensor network comprised of static and mobile sensors deployed both near the exclusion zone and elsewhere in Japan. Besides Japan, Safecast has started an effort to measure radiation levels around the planet. The Safecast project recently won Honorary Mention at the Ars Electronica Grand Prix 2012.
In this presentation Safecast will show you how radiation levels are continually measured and how, via the internet, the general public can have full access to all information collected.
About the Speaker
Pieter Franken is Co-Founder and Director of Safecast Japan. In the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster, Pieter invented the iGeigie, a radiation sensor that docks with the iPhone to create a versatile Geiger counter. He has worked as IT head of retail at Citibank in Japan and was responsible for the IT deliveries at Shinsei Bank in Japan. Currently Pieter is spearheading new technology deployment at Monex Securities as their Chief Technology Officer and Head of IT.
