With the world-cup football in Brazil soon to come it's interesting to have a look at Japanese professional football, its history and current status. How is the particular Japanese culture reflected in the game and what parallels can be drawn between football and business in Japan?
Although for many foreigners in Japan football is the most popular sport, very few of them know about local professional football. Why is that? Why are few foreigners involved in Japanese football and if they are, why do they tend to stay only short term?
Foreign coaches in the Japanese professional football academies can be counted on the fingers of a single hand, Dutchman Robbie Servais is one of them. He will give his insights of 5 years in Japanese professional football. He analyses the cultural differences between western and Japanese football and links them to daily life and business in Japan.
Robbie Servais (38) studied international business at Maastricht university while playing for MVV Maastricht. After graduation he played for several clubs in the Netherlands and had stints in Japan, Singapore and Vietnam. 5 years ago he came to Japan through a business program from the European Commission. After graduation from the program he joined J-1 club Vissel Kobe as a coach in the academy. From there he moved to Omiya Ardija (J-1) for 2 years and recently he became head coach of the Arsenal franchise in Chiba.
